In fact, studies have shown that with diet and exercise alone, nearly 95% of obese patients will gain all the lost weight back within 5 years. On the other hand, long-term success rates for weight-loss surgery - including the LAP-BAND procedure - are remarkably high, allowing patients to maintain a loss of between 50-70% of their excess body weight. Though there are many factors that can impact an individual patient's weight-loss success, weight-loss surgery is simply the most effective long-term weight loss and healthy lifestyle solution for severely obese patients.&lt;br /&gt;Studies show that most patients that undergo weight-loss surgery will lose between 50-70% of their excess body weight within the first three years following their procedure. Guinane</title><content type='html'>&lt;div align="justify"&gt;Obesity is not only a dangerous health condition - it creates and complicates many additional health problems for its sufferers. As a result, obese individuals (those with a body mass index above 30) have a 50-100% greater risk of premature death compared to individuals with a healthy body weight. Furthermore, as body weight goes up, so does the potential for health problems and the risk of premature death. We will now review some of the most common health risks associated with obesity. However, we will also analyze the ways in which weight loss can not only reduce the risk of premature death and certain diseases, but also improve upon many secondary health conditions associated with obesity.&lt;br /&gt;Heart Disease&lt;br /&gt;The prevalence of many types of heart disease - including heart attack, congestive heart failure, angina or chest pain and abnormal heart rhythm - is greatly increased for individuals that are overweight or obese. In fact, obese individuals have a 70% increase chance of coronary artery disease. High blood pressure is also twice as common in obese individuals. Additionally, triglyceride (blood fat) levels are typically elevated in those suffering obesity, while HDL cholesterol - known as the 'good cholesterol' - is often present in lower amounts.&lt;br /&gt;Stroke&lt;br /&gt;Obese individuals have a 75% increased risk in having a stroke, as obesity is often considered a dangerous secondary risk factor for stroke. One of the most common causes of stroke is the condition known as atherosclerosis, a narrowing of the arteries that can lead to arterial blood clots. As atherosclerosis is worsened by a combination of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, lack of exercise and smoking; obese individuals are often at greater risk for stroke.&lt;br /&gt;Diabetes&lt;br /&gt;Studies have shown that a weight gain of just 11-18 pounds can double an individual's risk of developing type 2 diabetes. And over 80% of diabetes sufferers can be classified as overweight or obese, so there is a longstanding association between obesity and diabetes. Moreover, obese individuals have a 400% increased risk in developing diabetes.&lt;br /&gt;Cancer&lt;br /&gt;Obesity has been shown to place individuals at increased risk for several types of cancer, including cancers of the colon, gallbladder, prostate and kidneys. In overweight and obese women, the risk of endometrial cancer (a cancer developing in the lining of the uterus) and postmenopausal breast cancer are also increased. In fact, women that gain more than 20 pounds between age 18 and midlife are at twice the risk for postmenopausal breast cancer than women that maintain their weight throughout their adult years.&lt;br /&gt;Gallbladder Disease and Gallstones&lt;br /&gt;The prevalence of gallbladder disease and gallstones is about three times greater in obese individuals. It is also believed that the risk of symptomatic gallstones is directly related to an increase in weight and body mass index (BMI).&lt;br /&gt;Reproductive Complications&lt;br /&gt;In regards to the effects of obesity on pregnant mothers and newborn infants, expectant parents should be aware of several possible complications. Firstly, infants born to obese mothers are more prone to high birth weight. As a result, overweight and obese mothers are forced to undergo a higher rate of Cesarean section deliveries. Obesity has also been linked to a higher prevalence of birth defects, especially neural tube defects such as spina bifida, and complications during the labor and delivery stages. Most startlingly, obesity has been shown to increase the risk of death for mothers and infants during pregnancies and increase the risk of high blood pressure in expectant mothers by nearly 10 times.&lt;br /&gt;For women that are not pregnant but may become pregnant, obesity can cause women to experience irregular menstrual cycles and even infertility. I went from being an international class athlete to an overweight couch potato in a matter of months. Until one day I decided that I had to workout because once in my thirties, things could get bad quick. There is history of heart disease, diabetes and cancer in my family and I knew that I didn't want to deal with those issues and I was certain I didn't want to put my wife through an ordeal like that.&lt;br /&gt;So one day I decided I was going to exercise without any regard for outcome. This was going to be a time for myself and if I lost weight great and if not, that is fine too. Basically I had zero expectations. As I got fitter, I began to care about losing weight and that lead me in another mindset. I began to pay attention to the things I put in my mouth.&lt;br /&gt;I have conditioned myself to not like the taste of french fries or hamburgers or pizza and to love the looks, textures and flavor of a salad. After eating wholesome foods, I discovered that I didn't particularly enjoyed the after taste of cooking oil in those foods and I certainly didn't like how I felt after eating those types of foods. So basically I have re focused my approach to eating. My focus right now is in the right size portion for my meals. As they say, my eyes are bigger that my stomach and I tend to get larger amounts of food than I really need to.&lt;br /&gt;For me, I have found that 1800-1900 calories a day works best for fat loss. I am tracking my food intake using fitday.com or calorie king software and I keep making progress. Some weeks I lose a pound; others I lose a bit more and then there is those times when the scale either doesn't move or goes up. After all if there is one time in your life to look great it is your wedding day. There is just something inside of us that tells us that today is the day for me to be at my best and that includes losing weight for my wedding!&lt;br /&gt;With all hoopla that goes into planning this big event, it is no wonder that brides (and grooms) end up packing on a few extra pounds. After all, how many brunches, parties, girls night outs, guys night outs, showers, and dinners serve low fat, low calorie foods? None that I have ever seen or been to...&lt;br /&gt;As a recent Mother Of The Groom, I can testify about the battle to lose weight to look good in the dress. My odyssey started in January of 2007 with our son proposing to a wonderful woman. It did not dawn on me until about a month went by that I needed to lose weight for the wedding. It all started with trying to find a dress. (And I am sure that many Brides feel the same way about pre-wedding diets.) All the dresses made me look fat. Of course it was not the dresses fault it was mine. But it is always easier to blame the dress.&lt;br /&gt;Then the quest began to lose weight. I tried in February to start dieting, but Valentines Day put an abrupt end to that. Then we rush out to buy the newest magazine, book, or dvd, hoping that the Recipe For Success will change. Alas, it doesn't...and very often, neither do we.&lt;br /&gt;For those of us who are watching our weight, or even trying to lose weight, maybe it's time for us to start outsmarting ourselves. I'm game if you are!&lt;br /&gt;One of the tricks I've come across is deliciously simple and simply delicious: salads! Lots and lots of salads. Did you know that you can substitute a salad for just about any sandwich and save yourself lots of nasty calories?&lt;br /&gt;For example, in leiu of a turkey sandwich at lunch, have a tossed salad with: dark, leafy lettuce, baby spinach, tomatoes, turkey breast shredded or cut up, celery, and your favorite reduced fat dressing. When you use plenty of figure-friendly vegetables, you'll definitely get full and you'll never miss the bread. You also won't miss the fries or chips you'd normally have with a sandwich.&lt;br /&gt;Hungry for a big, fattening Mexican meal? How about this instead? Fill a large bowl with shredded lettuce, chopped tomatoes, shredded cheese, chopped green onions, cilantro (it's what makes it pop, so don't skimp), drained red kidney beans, chopped jalapeno peppers (as much or as little as you can tolerate). If you want a dressing - which you won't even need if you're generous with the cilantro and green onions - salsa or guacamole make nice accompaniments.&lt;br /&gt;If you want a little "meat" in your Mexican salad, heat up some Boca Burger Crumbles and toss with the salad. Delicious!&lt;br /&gt;Get creative with salads - never think you're limited to just lettuce and tomatoes. The trauma of such a loss can sometimes be overpowering when psychological obstacles develop and prevent the pained soul from accepting the loss with peace in mind.&lt;br /&gt;Specialists in the field or psychology, term this phase as the "denial phase", when the bereaved soul refuses to accept whatever has happened. For example, a teenage daughter on losing her mother might start acting as if her mother is only normally asleep and might try to wake her up. She might refuse to use the words "dead" or "gone" for her beloved mother. To help her overcome this phase, she must be taken to the grave proceedings to visualize the finality of death, which might reinforce the reality she was trying to elude. But, most important of all, she must be allowed to take her own time to come to terms with the truth. Forcing matters on her, might worsen the situation.&lt;br /&gt;This phase is often followed or coincided by the "anger phase". At the sudden loss of a loved one, one tends to get angry at the situation, as one is then faced with a future one did not expect. This anger is generally directed towards destiny, the Almighty and who ever one thought did not do enough to save the life that has ended. When this anger is directed towards one's own self, one often becomes depressed. More so when the anger remains suppressed. It is very important at this stage to express the anger. Family and friends around should be sensitive and should try to discover if any frustration and anger has accumulated in the mind of the person at loss. If they find trace of any such frustration, they should help at the anger getting expressed. They should keep vigil of the fact that the bereaved mind does not turn destructive in anger. The individual at loss should himself or herself try to get the anger out of his or her system by screaming, yelling or even cursing.&lt;br /&gt;This phase is often coincided or followed by the ever-critical "depression phase", when the bereaved mind is filled with a feeling of hopelessness as it is now when the individual first realizes that his or her loved one is never going to return. Letting go often proves to be very depressing. Some people overcome depression fast, while there are some who take really long to do so. But an aggrieved soul may not necessarily mean a clinically depressed soul. If only the grieving period seems to be a bit extended, accompanied by the refusal to accept support, loss of self-esteem and physical abnormalities, medical help should be sought. One should not shy off from seeking professional assistance. In the depression phase, it is normal that one will feel like crying one's heart out. One should not be ashamed of doing so. Tears are generally healers. But again, if this continues for months, medical assistance should be sought.&lt;br /&gt;A journey, through all these phases, normally brings the aggrieved mind to the "acceptance phase". Even as it continues to love and miss the deceased, new days bring newer meanings and it accepts death as an unavoidable truth. It admits the fact that the loss was meant to be.
